María Berrelleza is a five-time Emmy Award-winning journalist with a seven year experienced as a Multimedia Journalist and currently a News Reporter for Noticias Univision Chicago. Since she joined in February 2022, her coverage spans a wide array of impactful stories, from those affecting the Latino community to politics and even the Highland Park mass shooting. Berrelleza’s exceptional talent was swiftly recognized when she clinched her first Emmy in the Midwest Region within her inaugural year in the market, demonstrating her ability to deliver compelling stories under tight deadlines.
Before her tenure at Univision Chicago, Berrelleza made her mark in newsrooms across the country. She was part of NBC Telemundo in California, where she covered the Sacramento and Fresno areas, as well as multimedia reporting positions at Univision affiliates in Philadelphia and Phoenix. It was in Phoenix where she launched her journalism career, demonstrating her passion and commitment to storytelling from the very beginning.
Throughout her career, Berrelelza has been recognized with numerous awards, including five Emmy Awards and a prestigious Golden Mike Award. Her innovative approach to multimedia journalism enriches every project she undertakes, bringing fresh perspectives and engaging narratives to her audience.
Originally from Sinaloa, Mexico, she embodies the spirit of the American dream as a first-generation college student. In 2017, she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Communications at Arizona State University, laying the foundation for an exceptional career.
